With the eventual emergence of a fully functional IPTV system we will see a change in the overall technological paradigm. IPTV will enable thousands of simultaneous one way and interactive channels to conduct both commercial entertainment and business teleconferencing on the existing Internet and meshed private internets.
It is not a stretch to believe that the same Internet will handle all of the voice communications that we conduct today. This will also include all the “cloud computing†business applications. Add to the mix personal computing needs such as security monitoring and individual music and video databases.
The Internet can handle the traffic. The new Optical Transport Network (OTN) based on G.709 can handle multiple channels adding up to 1 Terabit speed of transmission with 10 Terabit protocols not far behind.
New end user devices will be developed to handle the features that will be provided. They may be bigger with multiple processors to handle hand-held video conferencing and television, along with phone, GPS and music applications.
The problem will be access. We will have the all-powerful all-knowing Internet with a fully functional electronic box end user device connected on a dial-up at 9600 bps or maybe a T1/DS1, well. no.
The answer must be a meshed area of Femto cells/Pico cells gateways every mile connected through fiber optics to an access control vendor. How can we do this every mile? How about co-locating the cells with power lines across the city and country. It is optical transmission so noise would not be a problem.
Tell me what you think.
